Sports cars always push technology to the limits. It’s not too difficult to make a suspension that is good for high speed driving, but combining this with comfort for the driver in city traffic is challenging. Due to the large number of seals involved and high pressures, keeping friction to a minimum with leak-free performance at low temperatures is hard.
This is why Tenneco, one of the world’s leading designers, manufacturers and distributors of clean air and ride performance products and systems, approached Trelleborg Sealing Solutions for seals to be used in its advanced shock absorber with integrated anti - roll functionality.


From the early sketches, through to product development and testing, engineers from both Tenneco and Trelleborg Sealing Solutions sat together on a weekly basis to discuss all aspects of the application in full detail. This collaboration, backed by global R&D teams and global manufacturing expertise, resulted in the specification of Turcon® M12 PTFE based material, developed in Helsingør, and new XLT low- temperature compounds, from Malta. FEA analysis, per formed by R&D in Stuttgart, provided specifications for a suitable scraper design and arranged cost-effective manufacturing in Asia. The complete system was tested and validated on a dedicated shock absorber test rig in Stuttgart, to fine tune and prove the performance of the components.
